I was thinking about how to _actually_ maximise Brent's misery, and it was a fun puzzle. My analysis: Guys like Brent don't respond to traditional torture because they're _reactive_ -- that is, they have _enemies,_ and most of what they do is to stick it to one of them: parents wanted them to get a "real" job, got the dodgiest one they could find; college turned them down, staunchly anti-intellectual; common decency frowns upon them, offends as many people as possible. Traditional physical torture makes _you_ the enemy, which does nothing but validate their worldview, so regardless of how much _pain_ you cause, there's a limit to how much _misery_ results. The trick to it is that their rebel instinct needs a target, and in the absence of one, it will turn inward; so, your job as a torturer is to _deny him an enemy._ In other words, to make him _torture himself._ An initial idea: take everything he raled on in life, be that smart people, sensitive minorities, functioning members of society etc., and condense all those traits into two people (there _must_ be more than one, so he's a minority voice; three or more is unnecessary). These people will wake him up in a house designed exactly to _their_ tastes (which means _against_ his), and explain to him that he's dead, the two of them are humans, and they're in the Good Place. They will tell him that he can't leave the house, despite the _wildest_ rager of all Eternity blaring right across the street, because he's not meant to be there: he was initially slated for the Bad Place, but they smuggled him out. That is all they will _directly_ tell him, at least at first, but the environmental story will be: the traits of his that landed him in the Bad Place were _exactly_ the ones that he agreed were flaws (whether they were good or bad); these two took a chance on him because they believed he had the potential to be good, and they did this at _great_ personal risk; and their objective is to teach him, through compassion and instruction, how to be a better person. Here's the dark twist: what they try to teach him, the challenges they set, will be presented as if they are basic; but in reality, they will always be just _slightly_ beyond what he can understand and achieve. As he gets better, the challenges get harder, and he never _quite_ succeeds, but he always gets close enough to want to keep trying. This whole time, the two people show obvious disappointment, but never anger or resentment, and they frequently miss opportunities they wanted to take because of their responsibilities with him. He may even try to expose himself to escape, but they will always cover him up by the skin of their teeth, clearly distressed but never turning on him. Thus, the only one to blame for his current situation, his failure, his hosts' misery, is himself. You want _misery,_ that's how you do it. (Note: this will _not_ work as a mutual torture scenario like Michael attempted, as no human possesses this degree of patience. This is, however, _much_ more efficient in both personnel and output. And it only takes a _slight_ modification to work under the new system.)

Tahani and her “failure” is actually a good representation of Abrahamic religions’ dogmatism and how cruel and unfair it is to human nature, despite the apparent simplicity of the rules. No matter of your personal development, intentions and final outcomes - you fail the “test” if you don’t follow exactly the given instructions.

Tahani's test is so wild when you really think about it. The goal is to get through the red door without opening any others. Presumably the closer Tahani gets to the red door, the more tempting the names on the plaques become. When Tahani stops at her parents' door, she looks down the hallway and from her perspective we see the red door and two other doors left. One door has a plaque and the other doesn't. Since these two doors are right next to the red door, they are presumably even more tempting than Tahani's parents' door. The door with the plaque is probably Kamilah, considering how much of their lives were spent in competition against each other. But what about the unmarked door? Why doesn't it have a name? Who is inside that room?

A thing about actors is they need to be in good shape, so people who have no reason to be ripped (a lecturer who's never mentioned working out) is for some reason ripped. It's weird

I hated how obnoxious they made the judge... but the moral dilemmas addressed in this show were just too interesting to pass up :)

I cry everytime I see this scene. Growing up my mom suffered heavily with addiction and I had a horrible childhood. Now she’s an addiction counselor and volunteers at my younger siblings schools. This perfectly explains my resentment for her; even tho I am proud of her now it still hurts so bad.

The good place is a realistic show about life.

I love the look on eleanor @1:58 so much processing is going on in here head but the main out is 'i think im in love you'. excellent acting from kristen bell. And i usually dont ship characters, especially when they dont have anything in common but chidi and eleanor really did feel like the missing pieces to each others puzzles.

Always was the most infuriating plot line! You don't forgive, certainly don't forget years of neglect just because they say "I changed". "OH, OK, you are a different person now, that's cool, go live your life, I am happy for you. I'll just sit and cry in the corner while somebody else is having my childhood". Hell no, real life doesn't work this way. Mother did nothing to earn forgiveness. Of course, it's all part of Eleanor's emotional growth, but I always roll my eyes on such plot lines.
